Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories

These drugs have two effects: They work as pain relievers and also reduce swelling and inflammation. This class of drug is often the first type of drug your doctor will use for arthritis because they work quickly and have less side effects than other drugs.

The most common side effect of these medications is upset stomach. Other side effects may include ringing in your ears, ulcers of the stomach, bleeding in intestines, kidney damage and heart failure. The chances of serious side effects have higher risks when used in high dosages and for long periods of time.

NSAIDs may be purchased in you local drug store or supermarket without prescription. The more potent types do have to be prescribed by your doctor. Some of the more common forms of NSIDs are:

  • Advil
  • Motrin
  • Nuprin
  • Aleve
  • Orudis KT
  • Aspirin

You and your doctor will determine which medication is best for you. He/she will want to review you current medication list and also review your medical problems. What is ordered will also depend on what kind of arthritis you have and the amount of pain you are having. After a trial of this mediation, he/she will want to know how you are feeling.

No drug works for everyone. You may have to try several before finding the one that works best for you.

This information is only a guide. For complete information on the drug, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
