Cytotoxic Drugs or Disease Modifiers

This class of drugs are very powerful medications. They tend to slow down the disease process by affecting the growth and action of some cells that cause joint pain, swelling, warmth and damage. These drugs are given in pill form but on occasion may be given by shot. They are not a quick acting drug. It may take weeks or months to see and feel the results of this drug.

This medication is given by prescription from your doctor. It does require close monitoring by your doctor which may include blood testing and frequent office visits.

Some of the Cytotoxic drugs used are:

  • Imuran or Azathioprine
  • Cytoxan or Cyclophosphamide
  • Methotrexate or Rheumatrex
