Corticosteroids

These medications are prescribed to reduce severe pain and swelling. These are man made drugs to closely produce the effects of cortisone, a natural hormone. These medications are used commonly because of their being very effective in reducing inflammation and thus reducing pain, swelling, warmth.

This medication can be given in pill or injection form. Injections can bring very quick relief. This method of treatment is limited in its use because it can cause weakening of bone and cartilage. They can only be prescribed by a doctor. They are often referred to as steroids. They are not the same type of steroids that athletes sometime abuse.

Some of the more common types of Corticosteroids are:

  • Cortisone
  • Prednisone
  • Methyl Prednisone
